Gotra (गोत्र) is one of the most important pieces of information required for Pind Daan — yet many modern Hindu families, especially NRIs and urban families, have lost this knowledge.
What is Gotra? Gotra literally means 'cow-pen' in Sanskrit — but its ritual meaning is 'patrilineal lineage traced to an ancient Vedic Rishi.' Every Hindu family belongs to one of 49 primary gotras, each named after the Saptarishi (seven sages) or their disciples who founded the lineage.
Why Gotra is Required for Pind Daan During the Sankalp (ritual vow) at the beginning of Pind Daan, the Gayawal Purohit recites the performer's full identity: name, father's name, gotra, place of origin, and the ancestor's details. This precise identification ensures the ritual energy is directed to the correct ancestral lineage in the cosmic record.
The Major Gotras (Saptrishi-derived) 1. **Bharadvaja** — Rishi Bharadvaja's lineage (very common) 2. **Kashyapa** — Rishi Kashyapa's lineage (largest gotra group) 3. **Vasishtha** — Rishi Vasishtha's lineage 4. **Vishvamitra** — Rishi Vishvamitra's lineage 5. **Gautama** — Rishi Gautama's lineage 6. **Atri** — Rishi Atri's lineage 7. **Jamadagni** — Rishi Jamadagni's lineage 8. **Agastya** — Rishi Agastya's lineage (South India common) 9. **Kaundilya** — Popular in Bihar and UP 10. **Sandilya** — Common in Bengal and Eastern India
How to Find Your Gotra if Unknown 1. Ask your father, uncle, or any elder male relative 2. Check your family's ancestral home (many have gotra written in family records) 3. Ask your family's ancestral Pandit (kul-purohit) 4. Check your horoscope (janam patrika) — gotra is often recorded there 5. Look at wedding invitations — gotra is stated in traditional invitation cards
What If You Cannot Find Your Gotra? If despite all efforts your gotra remains unknown, Pitraya's Gayawal Purohit will perform the Sankalp using 'Kashyapa Gotra' — the universal default gotra for Hindus whose lineage cannot be determined. This is fully accepted by all Dharmashastra authorities.

Does gotra change after a woman's marriage?▼
Traditionally, a woman's gotra changes to her husband's gotra at marriage. However, for performing Pind Daan for her birth parents, she uses her birth gotra (father's gotra). The Gayawal Purohit will clarify this based on whose Pind Daan is being performed.
Can people from the same gotra perform Pind Daan together?▼
The same-gotra marriage restriction (gotra exogamy) does not apply to Pind Daan ceremony participation. Multiple relatives from the same gotra can all perform the ceremony together for the same ancestors.
