The Falgu (also spelled Phalgu) River flows through the sacred city of Gaya in Bihar, India. Unlike other rivers visible on the surface, the Falgu is a unique river that flows primarily beneath a sandy riverbed, with water visible only in certain seasons and at specific sacred ghats.
The Legend of Sita's Curse According to Valmiki Ramayana tradition, when Lord Rama went into the forest to collect flowers and Brahmin ingredients for King Dasharatha's Pinda ceremony, Goddess Sita — alone on the riverbank — saw a vision of her departed father-in-law appearing and asking for immediate ancestral offerings. Unable to wait for Rama, Sita performed the Pinda ceremony using sand, the Falgu River, an Akshayvat leaf, and a cow as witnesses.
When Rama returned, the Falgu River denied being a witness to Sita's ceremony. Enraged by this untruth, Goddess Sita cursed the Falgu River to flow underground and invisibly forever — which is why even today the river flows as an antarvahini (underground river).
The Spiritual Significance for Pilgrims Despite flowing underground, the Falgu River retains immense sanctity. Pilgrims descend to Vishnupad Ghat and Sitakund Ghat to perform: - **Pinda Visarjan**: Immersion of rice Pindas into the sacred sand - **Tarpan**: Water offering with sesame seeds for departed ancestors - **Holy Dip**: Ritual bathing before temple entry
