Surya Kund Gaya — The Sun God's Sacred Pool & Surya Arghya in the Pind Daan Circuit

Surya Kund (सूर्य कुण्ड) is the sacred pool in Gaya dedicated to Surya Deva (the Sun God) — one of the five primary deities in Hinduism and the cosmic witness to all Shradh ceremonies.

Why the Sun God Matters for Pind Daan In Vedic cosmology, Surya (the Sun) serves as the supreme witness (Sakshi) to all ritual acts. The Rigveda states: 'All ancestral offerings are received and transmitted by Surya to their intended recipients in the ancestral realm.' This is why Tarpan (water libation) is always performed facing the sun, and why solar eclipse days are supremely powerful for ancestral rites.

The Surya Kund at Gaya Surya Kund is a small sacred tank surrounded by ancient stone structures and a Surya Temple. Pilgrims performing Pind Daan at Gaya traditionally visit Surya Kund to: 1. Offer Arghya (sacred water offering) to Surya at sunrise 2. Perform the Surya Namaskar (salutation to the sun) as a purification before the main ceremony 3. Obtain the sun's blessing (Surya Ashirvad) for the ancestral ceremony

The Surya Arghya Ceremony At sunrise, pilgrims stand facing east at Surya Kund's edge. Copper vessels filled with sesame-mixed water are held above the head and poured slowly toward the rising sun while reciting the Surya Gayatri mantra. The sun's rays passing through the water stream are considered purified and ancestrally charged.
