The Vishnupad Temple (Vishnu Pada Mandir) is the most sacred site in all of Gaya Kshetra and the spiritual epicentre of ancestral Pind Daan worship. The temple enshrines the divine paduka (footprint) of Lord Vishnu imprinted 40cm deep into solid basalt rock — making Gaya the only place on earth where Vishnu's physical presence is enshrined as Pitru Tarpana Peetha.
Sacred Architecture & Temple Layout The current temple structure was rebuilt in 1787 by Ahilya Bai Holkar, the Maratha queen renowned for her temple restoration projects across India. The octagonal shikhara tower rises 30 metres above the Falgu River ghats, and the outer mandap (hall) is encircled by 108 carved shrines representing the entire Gaya Kshetra circuit.
