Pretshila Hill (Pretatshila) is one of Gaya's holiest peaks where Lord Dharmaraja (Yama) is believed to preside over ancestral souls. The Shila Daan ceremony performed here is an essential component of a complete Gaya pilgrimage.
Pretshila Hill (प्रेतशिला पहाड़), located 16 km from central Gaya, is one of the most sacred and mysterious sites in the Gaya Kshetra. The name derives from 'Preta' (ancestral spirit) and 'Shila' (sacred rock) — literally 'the sacred rock of spirits.'
Puranic Significance According to the Vayu Purana's Gaya Mahatmya, Lord Dharmaraja (Yama — the deity of death) established his divine throne on Pretshila Hill after a sacred conversation with Lord Brahma. It is believed that the souls of recently deceased ancestors reside temporarily on Pretshila before their final liberation.
The Garuda Purana states that a Pinda offered on Pretshila Hill directly reaches the presiding deity of ancestral souls (Dharmaraja) and grants liberation to ancestors who died due to unnatural causes — accidents, sudden death, or those without male descendants.
The Shila Daan Ceremony The Shila Daan at Pretshila involves placing a sacred stone (shila) inscribed with the ancestor's name and gotra into a designated repository maintained by the Gayawal Purohit Sabha. This physical marker in the sacred mountain acts as a permanent address for the ancestor's liberation.
How to Reach Pretshila Hill Pretshila is located 16 km from Gaya city. The route: Gaya Station → Tekari Road → Pretshila base. Auto-rickshaws and private vehicles are available. Pitraya packages include private vehicle transport to Pretshila as part of the 16+ Dhaam ceremonies.
The Ascent and Darshan From the base, pilgrims climb 432 stone steps to reach the main shrine at the summit. The ascent takes 25-40 minutes. The summit shrine contains images of Lord Dharmaraja, Lord Vishnu, and the sacred Pretshila rock itself.
Best Time to Visit Pretshila
Pretshila is most auspicious during Pitru Paksha (the 16-day ancestral fortnight in September-October). The site is open year-round from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Early morning visits (before 8 AM) are recommended to avoid afternoon heat and crowds, especially during Pitru Paksha when thousands of pilgrims arrive daily.
