Ramshila Hill Gaya — Where Lord Ram Performed Pind Daan for King Dasharatha

Ramshila Hill (रामशिला पहाड़) holds the most powerful emotional resonance of any sacred site in Gaya — it is the exact location where the Valmiki Ramayana records Lord Rama performing Pind Daan for his father King Dasharatha.

The Ramayana Account The Valmiki Ramayana (Ayodhya Kanda) describes in detail how Lord Rama, Sita Mata, and Lakshmana arrived at Gaya after receiving news of Dasharatha's death while in exile in the Dandaka forest. At Gaya, while Rama went to gather Pind Daan materials, the disembodied voice of King Dasharatha appeared before Sita Mata on the banks of the Phalgu River, requesting immediate Pind Daan.

Sita Mata offered Pind Daan using the river's sand (since the sacred materials were not yet ready) — this spontaneous act of a daughter-in-law offering Pind Daan is the scriptural basis for the tradition that women too can perform Pind Daan.

Ramshila Hill Today Ramshila Hill stands 300 meters above Gaya city. The summit houses the Rameshwar Shiva Linga — consecrated by Lord Rama himself according to local tradition — and a sacred footprint of Lord Rama (Ram Pada). The Pind Daan performed at Ram Pada is considered especially efficacious for ancestral liberation.

The View from Ramshila Summit From the summit, pilgrims can see the entire sacred geography of Gaya: Vishnupad Temple dome, Pretshila Hill to the south, the Phalgu River sand banks, and on clear days, Bodh Gaya's Mahabodhi Stupa 15 km away. This panoramic view of the Gaya Kshetra is itself considered spiritually purifying.
