Brahma Kund Gaya — The Sacred Bathing Tank Where Lord Brahma's Yajna Created the Gaya Kshetra

Brahma Kund (ब्रह्म कुण्ड) is the ancient sacred tank located near the Vishnupad Temple complex in Gaya. It is named for its connection to Lord Brahma's legendary yajna (sacred fire ceremony) that the Vayu Purana describes as the event that consecrated the entire Gaya Kshetra as a permanent sacred territory.

The Creation Legend The Vayu Purana's Gaya Mahatmya recounts: Lord Brahma performed a thousand-year yajna at Gaya to honor Lord Vishnu's footprint. During this yajna, the sacred water used for ritual purification collected in a depression that became Brahma Kund. Lord Brahma declared: 'Whosoever bathes in this Kund before performing Pind Daan shall be purified of all Ashaucha (ritual impurity) and may proceed to Vishnupad Temple in full spiritual purity.'

The Brahma Kund Snana (Ritual Bath) Pilgrims performing Pind Daan traditionally take a ritual bath (Snana) in Brahma Kund before proceeding to the Vishnupad Temple ceremony. The Snana: - Purifies the performer of all accumulated ritual impurity - Is accompanied by specific mantras invoking Lord Brahma and the sacred waters - Is performed at dawn for maximum efficacy - Uses water from the Kund itself — pilgrims should carry a small amount home as Tirth Prasad

Brahma Kund Today The current Brahma Kund is a maintained bathing tank near the main Gaya city center. Steps lead into the water, and small shrines surround the tank. The water is considered sacred year-round, with special significance during Pitru Paksha.
