Mahalaya Amavasya 2026 — The Most Sacred Day for Pind Daan in the Entire Year

Mahalaya Amavasya — the final day of Pitru Paksha — is the single most powerful day for Pind Daan in the entire year. The Vayu Purana states that Pind Daan performed at Gaya on this day liberates 21 generations of ancestors.

Mahalaya Amavasya (महालय अमावस्या) is the final day of the Pitru Paksha — the 16-day ancestral fortnight — and holds the highest position in the Hindu ancestral calendar. It is also called 'Sarva Pitru Amavasya' because on this day, families can perform Shradh for ALL deceased relatives regardless of their individual death tithis.

Mahalaya Amavasya 2026 Date **September 21, 2026 (Sunday)** Timing at Gaya: Kutapa Muhurta (the supreme Pind Daan window) is from 11:45 AM to 12:30 PM IST. The entire day is auspicious.

Why Mahalaya Amavasya is Supreme The Vayu Purana declares in the Gaya Mahatmya: 'On Mahalaya Amavasya at Gaya, even a simple water libation liberates the entire ancestral lineage across 21 generations.' This is the most powerful statement in all of Sanskrit literature about any single day's ritual power.

The astronomical reason: on Mahalaya Amavasya, the sun enters Virgo (Kanya Rashi) while the moon is at zero degrees — this specific conjunction opens the maximum cosmic channel to the ancestral realm.

Who Crowds Gaya on Mahalaya Amavasya Approximately 3-5 lakh pilgrims visit Gaya on Mahalaya Amavasya every year. Hotels within 5 km of Vishnupad Temple are completely booked months in advance. The ceremony itself takes significantly longer due to crowds at the main Ghats.

How Pitraya Manages Mahalaya Amavasya Pitraya allocates reserved ceremony slots at Vishnupad Temple for pre-booked pilgrims. Our dedicated Gayawal Purohits maintain separate ceremony spaces at subsidiary sacred sites to avoid the main ghat crowds while maintaining full ritual validity.

Sarva Pitru — The Universal Ancestral Prayer on Mahalaya

On Mahalaya Amavasya, a special prayer called Sarva Pitru Tarpan covers all ancestors — known and unknown, named and unnamed. Families who do not know the names or gotras of older ancestors can have this universal prayer performed on their behalf. Pitraya includes Sarva Pitru Tarpan in all Mahalaya packages.
